Fascinating, a real look into my past.
Stanley R Dean is my grandfather, a parent of wisdom, and from him I gather apparent traits and inquiries into myself, my past, and the unique cosmicforce of synchronicity that abounds the universe and connects us to one another. A grandfather, my Grandpa Stan, from a grand past, a Grand Pastan . . . . an anthem of thoughts. Please feel free to e-mail me at

Pullman; An Experiment in Industrial Order and Community Planning, 1880-1930
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1970)
Author: Stanley Buder
Average review score:

Excellent study of Pullman; the man, company, and town
This brilliantly researched and presented study by Buder objectively analyzes the impact that George Pullman had on the railroad industry, business in general, and his "model town" specifically. Buder looks at not only the why, but the how of the town's failure. After a good reading, discussions of "paternalism" vs. "benevolency" are sure to arise.

An indepth look at how the Red Wings won the Cup!
After following the 1997 Playoffs very carefully I find this book to be one of my most prized pocessions. Not only did it have all the stats of the playoffs, more importantly it expressed the emotions of the players, the fans and the entire city of Detroit. It also had wonderful action photos from each stage of the playoffs, all in colour. This is a job well done by the entire Detroit News Sports Staff. This hardcover version will be a treasure to any hockey fan, and is a must have for any Die Hard Red Wing Fan.

Random House Sunday Crosswords
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (14 August, 2001)
Author: Stanley Newman
Average review score:

Great puzzles for Sundays when not in New York
Vacationing in a cabin with no dictionary, I found this book both challenging but doable. When stuck on one puzzle, I found myself going to the next one but returning to previous puzzles and eventually solving them. My only problem was to hide the book from my husband and his mother, both who kept trying to do my puzzles.

Random House Ultrahard Crosswords
Published in Paperback by Times Books (February, 1995)
Author: Stanley Newman
Average review score:

Maybe not "Ultra-Hard" but better than most.
Finding a book of hard puzzles shouldn't have to include the fact that "Celibes ox" is "anoa". I've done all four Ultra-Hard puzzle books and they are clever and pretty challenging. Some of the interlocks are awe-inspiring; Eric Albert's Ultra-Ultra Hard puzzles are true-brain teasers, but always innovative. (For instance, the clue "sales pitch" turned out to be "pie". Get it? Like Soupy Sales throwing a pie.) highly recommended.

Rats in the Attic and Other Stories to Make Your Skin Crawl (An Avon Flare Book)

Very Cool
I was suprised. For a Juvenile book, these stories were excellent. Some of the best I've read.

Reading Cavell's the World Viewed: A Philosophical Perspective on Film (Contemporary Film and Television Series)
Published in Hardcover by Wayne State Univ Pr (November, 2000)
Authors: William Rothman and Marian Keane
Average review score:

LONG LIVE CAVELL
The brilliant mind of cinema and philosophy is made new again in this book by two writers passionate (and informed) about their subject. Where else can you read of American philosophy's presence in the films of Charlie Chaplin and Frank Capra? Interdisciplinary studies at its best.

Reading Chinese Newspapers: Tactics and Skills
Published in Paperback by Far Eastern Publications (February, 1991)
Author: Stanley Mickel
Average review score:

I used this book in my third year Chinese Class
This book is an excellent choice for a third year Chinese class. It not only teaches the fundamentals of newspaper Chinese, which is the basis for modern Chinese formal prose (shumianyu, not oral Chinese) it teaches how to identify gramatical markers and which use they have. The articles are relevent to contemporary China and provide an interesting starting point for oral discussions. Gaining access to newspaper Chinese introduces you to an entirely different type of journalism, and a valuable resource for understanding contemporary China. And we can no longer dismiss such publications as purely propaganda for the Communist Party, because the media has become much more liberalized and diverse opinions are appearing.
